You'll fill out a permit application only once; in succeeding years, Clark Public Utilities will reapply for you to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The criteria for project approval are listed below. If you have not yet applied to the program, download and print out the permit application or call your Salmon in the Classroom coordinator for more information.

Application Instructions

Name of the Organization

Most Salmon in the Classroom projects use the name of their school for Name of Applicant or Organization. If you want to use a name that better reflects your environmental education activities, please include the school's name so we will know in which school the project is taking place.

Project Manager/Participant

The teacher (occasionally the principal) responsible for the care of the aquarium is named project manager. Please list the school's address, including the zip code. If you would like information sent to your home, please list that address in addition to the school's address.

Project Description

Classroom salmon-rearing projects are done on an educational basis. Please provide as much information as possible to show the extent to which a Salmon in the Classroom project will enhance existing curriculum or how the community will be involved in the program.

Location of Project

Please include Section, Township and Range of your release site if possible. This information is available from topography or Metsker's maps, the local county planning office or your Salmon in the Classroom contact at Columbia Springs Environmental Education Center.

Waterway: Please list the name of the creek/stream where the fish will be released.

Watershed: Please list the name of the watershed that contains the creek you will be using or the name of the stream/river (or other body of water) that the creek flows into. Your CPU Salmon in the Classroom contact can help you with this.

Please include a vicinity map showing the location of the creek. Any photographs or survey information you can provide regarding the release site is very helpful to the biologists who will review your application.

Species Available

Coho eggs and fingerlings are available for use in Clark County aquariums. Coho eggs are usually reared from January through March or April.

Egg/Fingering Numbers

We recommend 250 eggs per 55-gallon aquarium. With more than that, the fish become crowded as they grow and are more easily stressed. Daily aquarium maintenance also becomes necessary to prevent serious water quality problems. We make 6 fingerlings available to each tank. This number of fish allows ample room for growth, maintains a surplus of dissolved oxygen, and minimizes the tank maintenance necessary during the busy fall season.
